For Jason Willingham, our Assistant Controller, that truth hits close to home.
Jason was born with one kidney that wasn’t particularly strong. He always knew that one day he might need a transplant to survive but nothing could have prepared him for how quickly life would change when that time came.
In his late twenties, Jason’s kidney began to fail. What started as exhaustion turned into a complete shift in how he lived. He began dialysis, a treatment that would soon dominate his days and redefine what he thought he could endure.
As someone who loved to travel, Jason quickly learned how limiting dialysis could be. His freedom, once measured in miles, was now measured in hours tethered to machines. The equipment nearly filled a room, and the toll on his body was immense. His muscles deteriorated, his strength faded, and his weight dropped to just 112 pounds. Even simple tasks like eating or walking became battles of will.
Adding to the challenge, Jason’s blood type meant a longer wait. Doctors told him it could take up to five years to receive a kidney. So he waited, hoping for the day his name would be called. Then, after three long years, that day came.
Jason received the call that would change everything. A donor kidney was available. The transplant was successful, and the moment he woke up, he felt something he hadn’t in years: hunger. Real hunger. His body was ready to rebuild.
Within 30 days, he gained 30 pounds, a powerful sign that he was alive and ready to start living again.
Today, Jason is thriving. He’s traveling again, exploring the world beyond the confines of a dialysis machine, and cherishing every moment that once seemed out of reach.
There are still countless people waiting and hoping for the call that could change their lives just like Jason’s did.
