Some factors that have contributed to the rise in popularity of same day shipping include:

(Taken from Geri Spieler of the Huffington Post Blog Titled Coming to a warehouse near you: The “Same Day Delivery” revolution 11/22/1016)

“Over the past 12 months, according to a 2016 study conducted by Walker Sands, half of all online shoppers have used one-day shipping, and 85 percent have used two-day shipping. Growth for buyer’s show that one in 10 has used same-day shipping over in the past year. And two-thirds of online shoppers who buy multiple products online, pick up their order at their local store.

Changes in warehouse usability

Same-day delivery works to close the deal more quickly by implanting fresh warehouse tactics to fuel warehouse e-commerce success. For retailers to stay competitive, they need to re-think their fulfillment options and offer their customers multiple shipping and delivery alternatives. Frequent online shoppers will choose the company that gives the most options.

High tech warehouse

The traditional warehouse was large buildings located out in rural areas where real estate is cheap. Today, all that has changed. Now warehouses are built along shipping routes and outfitted with new, robotic pick and pack technology.

Along with this new warehouse option, retailers’ strategies are changing dramatically and becoming a more critical piece of the e-commerce landscape — from how the geographic location of each warehouse is chosen to how products are documented and loaded into the warehouse inventory.
Using new technologies offers retailer’s competitive logistics and the ability to offer shipping options to that keep their customers happy.

Fulfillment centers take several configurations, these days. In some circumstances, a retailer may utilize a standard store as a local fulfillment center based on the location.

Amazon has been scouting real estate all over the U.S. and has built 70 million square feet of fulfillment center space nationwide. Along with the expanded warehouse space, it has launched a new service, “Get it Today” in 12 markets around the country that operate seven days a week.

“The trend is to locate DCs much closer to consumers and operate a lot more of them,” according to Garrick Brown, research director at Cassidy Turley, a commercial real estate firm based in St. Louis.

The brick-and-mortar hybrid

Brick-and-mortar stores need to re-invent their business model if they are going to stay relevant. Midrange stores, such as Target, are extending its brick-and-mortar roots by converting some of its storefront space as an alternative warehouse to increase sales and adapt to new consumer needs. In the fourth quarter of 2015, Target fulfilled 30 percent of its online orders from stores which was a record number of Internet customers who picked up their orders at the retail store.

It was evident to Target that fulfilling orders from its retail stores was proof for this angle in that Target’s success in fulfilling orders efficiently. Other retailers are still working out their strategy for inventory on the shelf or in the local warehouse.

With these results, more retailers are shifting to using their brick-and -mortar stores as fulfillment centers, thereby becoming a neighborhood warehouse.

“While we’ve added capacity across our entire direct-to-guest network, our fourth-quarter experience demonstrated the power of relying on our stores to fill digital demand,” said John Mulligan, Target’s chief operating office, in a Wall Street Journalarticle.

Same day delivery

To allow for an even balance between brick and mortar fulfillment centers and the traditional store, retailers need to move quickly to create a channel to fulfill its supply chain by using their store infrastructures as a national network of fulfillment centers.”

Deliveries to hospitals and clinics from blood banks is the most essential and on demand service that is utilized by our customers. The following is a story that happens all the time. This is why we do what we do.

“October 17, 2013 did not go as anyone had pictured it. It started as a day filled with anticipation and excitement as I was admitted to the labor and delivery floor to have our first child – a baby girl we named Georgia. It was the day after my due date, so she was actually quite punctual. After a pretty easy labor and a smooth delivery of our 8 pound, 8 ounce healthy baby girl, I began feeling ill. The medical staff equated it with a drop in my blood pressure and tilted my bed back to make me feel better, which worked initially. I had lost more blood than normal during the delivery, and it still seemed like there was something wrong.  My doctor told me that I was continuing to bleed and she couldn’t see where it was coming from, so we needed to go to the operating room (OR) to get a better look.

I ended up developing a very rare condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) that kept my blood from clotting normally. DIC has a high mortality rate and is difficult to control. I lost over three liters of my own blood and was in the OR for more than 3 intense hours while numerous physicians, CRNAs, nurses and technicians worked to stop my bleeding.  I received 12 units of blood, 6 units of fresh frozen plasma, and 2 units of platelets before I finally became stable and the bleeding was controlled. What had started as a happy, exciting day had ended in a roller coaster of emotions as my family waited to hear good news about my condition. The next morning I woke up intubated in the critical care unit where I stayed for two days before being able to move back to the labor and delivery floor with my husband and new baby girl. We stayed a total of 5 days in the hospital before we finally brought our little girl home with grateful hearts for the miracle that took place in our lives.

A few weeks after going home from the hospital I had the opportunity, along with my husband Todd and our daughter, to meet some employees from Arkansas Blood Institute. I was able to thank them and to let them see, first hand, the benefits and changed lives that resulted from the work that they do every day. It was a humbling experience to say the least.

Unfortunately, I have to say that I’ve never donated blood in the past; however, Arkansas Blood Institute has gained a lifelong blood donor after my experience. If it wasn’t for blood, plasma and platelet donors, the skilled medical staff wouldn’t have had the resources they needed to save my life and my Georgia would’ve grown up without her mother. I cannot express the extent to which blood donors have affected our family’s life. They kept our world from falling apart that day. Without them, I wouldn’t be enjoying the blessing of becoming a mother to a healthy, happy little girl.  Donating blood is such an easy way that each one of us can give back and change the lives of not only recipients but their loved ones as well. My daughter gets to know her mommy in part because a dozen people decided to donate blood.”

There are stories like this coming in from all over the country because of the work of hospital staff and the dedicated courier services tasked with stat transportation. We will continue to provide this valuable service and take pride in what we do.

Medical Courier Service

Why Communication Is Key For Medical Deliveries

Our Orlando office had an immediate blood delivery to a hospital for a patient on the table, during rush hour. If you’ve ever been to Orlando, it is near impossible to get one from side of town to the other during rush hour.

One of our dispatchers rerouted the driver to get through traffic, bypassing certain known zones of serious congestion. We kept the customer updated the entire time, dedicating to keeping a phone line free to stay in contact. The courier rushed in to the hospital to meet the doctor at the door of the emergency hallway. The doctor signed for it and immediately ran down the hallway to the aid of the patient.

The courier quickly entered the doctor’s name into the order on his smartphone, verifying a proof of delivery, which was immediately to sent to both our office and the customer!

Medical deliveries are extremely important to us. During difficult times, it’s important that the customer receives that specific blood sample or organ, earlier rather than later. The dispatchers keep the customer informed on the driver and aware them of any hiccups so they can plan accordingly upon receiving the package.

Communication is essential because critical updates are important. When you ship something through UPS or FedEx, you want a tracking number so you can verify where it is. We go beyond that by providing uptodate information. Who doesn’t want to know where their shipment is?

Medical or not, American Expediting Company takes the same care with deliveries to be sure that it is completed as quickly as possible.

We understand that every delivery is time-sensitive, ESPECIALLY medical deliveries. Every one of our offices in the country is capable at handling each delivery. Our goal is that the customer feels at ease when placing an order with us.

Next week we’ll give some insight about how we ensure our couriers are equipped with the necessary safety measures and equipment to handle medical deliveries.
